Our Essential Tasks for our Growing Season


As winter releases its grip and spring beckons, March heralds a vital transition in our vineyard calendar. This month lays the groundwork for our entire growing season filled with promise. Here are some of the tasks that inspire our focus in March.

Early March: Final Pruning Window


The beginning of March often represents the last opportunity for dormant pruning before bud break. During this period, we focus on:


- Completing final cane pruning

- Removing dead, diseased, or damaged wood

- Ensuring proper spacing between spurs to promote optimal air circulation

- Collecting pruned material from vineyard rows to prevent disease carryover


Our vineyard manager, Jesus Martinez, always pays special attention to pruning on days when temperatures are above freezing to minimize the risk of frost damage to fresh cuts.


Mid-March: Pre-Bud Break Preparations


As soil temperatures begin to rise, this period is critical for vineyard infrastructure and soil health:


Jesus will check and repair trellis systems, replacing any damaged posts or wires. Clear drainage ditches and ensure proper water management systems are functioning. He will also monitor soil moisture levels, as March can bring unpredictable precipitation patterns.


Late March: Bud Break Watch


By late March, we will notice the first signs of bud break. We will also keep an eye on weather forecasts for frost warnings, as those unexpected cold nights can be detrimental. Ensure your frost protection systems—like wind machines or sprinklers—are ready to go. We like to think of ourselves as the superheroes of our vineyard, ready to save the day when Jack Frost threatens!


Special Considerations for March


Weather Monitoring: March weather can be particularly volatile. Maintain a close watch on:

- Daily temperature fluctuations

- Frost predictions

- Soil moisture levels

- Wind patterns


Equipment Readiness:

- Service all vineyard equipment including sprayers and mowers

- Calibrate spray equipment

- Check irrigation systems for any winter damage

- Ensure frost protection systems are fully operational
